Customizing Shortcuts
Learn how to set up and customize keyboard shortcuts in Promptly
Promptly is designed to be keyboard-driven, allowing you to access AI assistance without disrupting your workflow. This guide explains how to customize the keyboard shortcuts to match your preferences.
Default Keyboard Shortcuts
Promptly comes with the following default shortcuts:
Accessing Shortcut Settings
To customize the keyboard shortcuts:
- Open Promptly
- Click on the Promptly menu in the menu bar
- Select Preferences (or use ⌘,)
- Navigate to the Shortcuts tab
Customizing a Shortcut
To change a keyboard shortcut:
- In the Shortcuts tab, find the action you want to modify
- Click on the current shortcut or the "Record Shortcut" button
- Press the new key combination you want to use
- Click "Save" to apply the change
Shortcut Conflicts
When setting a new shortcut, be aware of potential conflicts:
- Promptly will warn you if the shortcut you're trying to set is already used by another application
- Some system-wide shortcuts cannot be overridden
- If a shortcut doesn't work, check if it's being captured by another application
Tips for Choosing Shortcuts
When customizing your shortcuts, consider:
- Using modifier keys (Command, Option, Control, Shift) to avoid conflicts
- Creating a pattern that's easy to remember (like using the same base key with different modifiers)
- Avoiding shortcuts used by applications you frequently use
- Using function keys (F1-F12) if you prefer
Disabling Shortcuts
If you don't use a particular feature, you can disable its shortcut:
- Go to Preferences > Shortcuts
- Find the shortcut you want to disable
- Click on it and press the Delete or Backspace key
- Click "Save"
Global vs. Application-Specific Shortcuts
Promptly's shortcuts are global by default, meaning they work from any application. This is essential for the tool's seamless integration into your workflow.
Troubleshooting Shortcuts
If your shortcuts aren't working:
- Check macOS Permissions: Ensure Promptly has Accessibility permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
- Restart Promptly: Sometimes shortcuts may not register until the app is restarted
- Check for Conflicts: Try a different shortcut to see if there's a conflict with another application
- Verify Input Sources: Some keyboard layouts may handle shortcuts differently
Using Menu Bar Access
If you prefer not to use keyboard shortcuts, you can access all of Promptly's features through the menu bar:
- Click on the Promptly icon in the menu bar
- Select the desired action from the dropdown menu
